Marketing:
necessity of business
vs state of mind
It is very interesting to me, the marketing attitudes of so many people. Then again, maybe you can't blame them really. When I speak to business owners about placing ads, they fall into a clearly defined set of categories.
1. |
Those who have all the work they can handle and don't need advertising.
|
2. |
Those who can't afford advertising. |
3. |
Those who will jump at every chance to advertise because they see the value in it. |
Of course, as a marketer, the threes are my favorite but they seem few and far between. The ones and twos are more prevelant but they confuse me. I don't understand their logic.
First of all, if you have all the work you need, you should be growing your business. After all, isn't that why we go into business in the first place... to grow? In this economy that means more jobs for others and let me tell you, I know plenty of people willing to do just about anything to have a job. Yet, I don't see the newspapers filled with requests for resumes and offering job openings.
Secondly, if there is one thing business owners need who can't afford advertising, it's... you guessed it... more advertising! Oh, I understand the argument and even know first hand about "paying the bills" but, come on now, really! If you need more cash flow you need customers and the only way to get customers is to promote yourself.
