While the term "Going Green" is a relatively modern term, the concepts of environmentalism date back to the 11th century, if not earlier, and encompass many forms. Today's variety has been classified into three, primary categories: Light, Dark, and Bright Greens. Light Greens may be considered reformists but on the level of personal choice, whether or not to follow a lifestyle that includes environmentally supportive behaviors. Dark Greens blame industrial capitalism for our ills and turn predominently to political solutions. Bright Greens are less concerned with placing blame and repsonsibility on personal choice but see such a lifestyle as a global, social responsibility to heal the planet. They are more concerned with the available "tools, models and ideas", including current technologies, to correct global problems and encourage economic and political changes necessary to support sustainable living without turning to "the bleakness of protest and dissent for the energizing confidence of constructive solutions".

As of June 2008, California became the first-in-the-nation to adopt a statewide green building code. In support of sustainable living, Anza Business Center is working to provide tools and resources to the local communities that will encourage planet-healing decisions by all local residents in particular, and global residents in general.

What's happening?

The GREEN concept has been applied to nearly every phase of our lives and boils down to how we create things, how we transport them, and how we dispose of them. Many common processes today create toxins that pollute our air, water, and soil. Chemicals used are nearly indestructible when it comes to decomposition and even create diseases among earth's many living things. We transport products around the globe without concern for the toxins created or unsustainable fuels used to do so. Our lifestyles habitually "waste" many items creating a need to produce more and therefore requiring more and more landfill space, which again creates more toxins that pollute our soil and water resources. As a result, we encourage manufacturers to continue the deadly cycles that support global warming, rampant disease, and depletion of our invaluable resourses for sustaining life.

Where to begin?

There are many things you can do in even the smallest way to help heal our Earth. You can start by reading some basic books on the topic and there are many. One excellent overview book is "365 Ways to Live Green" by Diane Gow McDilda. This book gives you a little history on why going green is important as well as hundreds of considerations when recyling, cleaning, disposing of items, selecting what to eat and wear, travel tips, as well as many business and home building tips. in addition, we are posting resources throughout our Anza Business Center website to help you participate in sustainable living. Look for the GREENspot on every page to locate these important links. If you haven't already done so, we encourage you, your family and your business, to become proactive today!

The media is full of articles on global warming, depletion of our natural resources (oil being of primary concern), the importance of recycling, and organic products. The problem with our current lifestyles are that so many of the products and materials we use not only harm our environment but also damage our immune systems making us vulnerable to a world of allergies and diseases, including such common ailments as migranes and depression. As long we continue to use resources that can't be replaced and pollute our soil, air, and water, these problems will continue. Fortunately, with today's technologies, we are able to improve many of our comfortable lifestyles while making them safer and longer lasting without enduring the dangers and long-term effects of synthetics and pollutants. However, it requires our commitment to re-educate ourselves and our children in ways that better sustain our planet.

Eco-Solutions are here!

Our Construction page offers you links to free information on building materials, methods, and education resources for creating eco-friendly, sustainable structures. You can also learn the standards and qualifications for certifying your structures as truly "GREEN".

Water is the most plentiful resource on the planet and yet it has become so scarce or inaccessible in some areas, such as California, that tensions and court cases have become common place across our nation. Wise usage and protection of our water is imperative for our survival.

Our greatest use of energy comes from our cars and our homes. Fuels, water and electricity consumption must be carefully considered. Links on our Agriculture page will share concepts such as rainwater harvesting, drought resistant landscaping, and graywater reuse. Links on our Utilities page suggest a myriad of energy-saving tips and inexpensive ways to lower all your living expenses while healing yourself as well as the planet.

Energy-saving techniques not only save money but help you use our planet's resources more efficiently and retard their depletion.

On the Clothing page are links to supplies and fabrics for creating your own healthy garments as well as natural cleaning products for their eco-friendly care.

Speaking of cleaners, most common cleaning products are made with harsh chemicals and bleaches. Our Cleaning page has links to producers of all-natural products for maintaining a clean, healthy environment.

Our homes and work places are also living spaces for a host of micro-world inhabitants, such as dust mites, lice, fleas, bacteria and mold. Along with tending to cleanliness we must consider our carpets, furniture, drapes, and linens considering both their fabrics and maintenance. You can find information on these and health-related topics on our Furniture, Health & Medical, and Personal Care pages.
Even our animals are affected by the way we live and the products we use. Check the GREENspot links on our Animal Care page for ways to protect them as well.
